TERMS OF SERVICE

// WHITTLE.LOL · VERSION 1 · PLAIN LANGUAGE
Short version: post your own material, don't post slurs or threats, and understand that the sysop can delete anything and ban anyone. The long version is below, and it's the one that counts.

01 — WHO CAN USE WHITTLE

You must be 16 or older to use Whittle. This is a place where adults tell jokes that are frequently in poor taste; it isn't built for children, and we don't knowingly collect information from anyone under 16. If we learn an account belongs to someone younger, we'll remove it.

You need an account to post or vote. Accounts are created by logging in with Discord or with an email address (magic link). You're responsible for what happens under your account.

02 — YOUR CONTENT

You keep ownership of the lines and comebacks you write. By posting them to Whittle you grant us a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free licence to store, display, reproduce and distribute that content as part of operating and promoting the service — on the site, in shareable cards, and where Whittle is discussed.

You confirm that what you post is yours to post and doesn't infringe anyone else's rights.

Note the obvious: most of what gets posted to Whittle is cut at midnight and never carries forward. Whittle is not a backup, an archive, or a safe place to keep anything you care about — there is no folder of your things here and no way to get a line back into play. Cut lines do stay visible on the board that judged them, which is a record of that night rather than a home for your writing. Assume anything you post is out of your hands the moment you post it, because that is the entire point of the product.

03 — REMOVAL AND BANS

We may remove any content at any time, for any reason or for no reason, with or without notice. We may suspend or terminate any account at our sole discretion, permanently, with or without notice or explanation.

We are not obliged to give you a reason, to hear an appeal, or to keep a copy of anything we remove. The Community Guidelines describe how we intend to use this power; they do not limit it.

04 — ACCEPTABLE USE

Don't: post slurs or hate targeting people for who they are; make credible threats of violence; post sexual content involving minors or anything else illegal; publish private information about people; impersonate anyone; spam, scrape or automate accounts; or attempt to break, overload or bypass the service's technical controls.

See the Community Guidelines for the plain-language version of where the line actually falls.

05 — THE SERVICE ITSELF

Whittle is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. We don't promise the site will be available, uninterrupted or error-free, or that the game will run correctly on any given night.

We may change, suspend or discontinue any part of Whittle — or shut it down entirely — at any time, without notice and without liability to you.

06 — LIMITATION OF LIABILITY

To the maximum extent permitted by law, Whittle and its operator are not liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or for any loss of data, content, reputation or profits arising from your use of the service.

Where liability cannot lawfully be excluded, it is limited to the greater of the amount you have paid us (at present, nothing) or USD $50.

Nothing here excludes liability that cannot legally be excluded. Some jurisdictions don't allow certain exclusions, in which case those parts don't apply to you.

07 — CHANGES TO THESE TERMS

We may update these terms. If a change is material we'll say so on the site. Continuing to use Whittle after a change means you accept the updated terms.
